I’ll put my request right here at the top, but keep reading if you’d like some context.

Basically, I’m looking to talk on the phone with cool people running businesses that do at least $100k in revenue each year. Maybe that describes you or someone you know? If the latter, any chance of an introduction?

Okay, some context…

You might have heard that I’m building a software company (as per my last blog post). Some people have asked me what kind of software I’m going to build and the truth is, I have no idea.

Rather than start with an idea, I’m aiming to speak with lots of business owners to find out about their struggles and frustrations. Once I hear a specific problem coming up over and over again — one that business owners will happily pay to have solved — then I’ll go ahead and build a software solution to that problem.

This past week I tried reaching out to business owners in Australia to see if I could find some problems worth solving in their industry. Unfortunately, convincing them to jump on the phone with me wasn’t easy, as it’s automatically assumed that I’m a sleazy salesperson trying to dupe them into buying something they don’t need. This seems to be a difficult assumption to shake even when I email in advance of calling and explain my intentions.

So rather than keep banging my head against the wall looking for the one business owner in fifty who will happily talk to a stranger, I figured it would be smarter to try make use of my existing connections online.

This is where you come in:

  • You already know I’m not a sleazy salesperson (I hope!)
  • You may be running a $100k business yourself and would happily spare a half hour or so to chat with me on Skype.
  • Or you may know someone running a $100k business who would be happy to chat with me if you made an introduction.

What do you think? Can you help me out?

If so, please drop a comment below or shoot me a quick email via himself@ndoherty.com (subject line: I can help), and I’ll get back to you soon.

Also feel free to share this blog post with anyone who might be interested (I recorded the above video especially for them).

To answer a few questions you might have in advance…

Why are you only looking to talk to people running businesses pulling in more than $100k in revenue per year?

Because over $100k and you’re a lot more likely to invest in software that can help your business. Or to say it another way, over $100k and I’m more likely to uncover a problem that you’d happily pay to have solved.

Can the business be in any industry?

Initially, yes. Right now I’m looking to get more comfortable talking with business owners and asking the right kinds of questions. Down the line I will want to focus on a specific industry, but it doesn’t matter much what industry it is. As long as I can help improve the lives of honest business owners who deliver good value to their customers, I’ll be happy.

Does it have to be an online business?

No. Any business that uses or is not opposed to using software is fine by me. Also doesn’t matter where in the world the business is located. As long as we can sync a time to chat over the phone, it’s all good.

I have such a business but I’m not looking to invest in software. Still want to talk to me?

Yes. I’m not going to be giving you a pushy sales pitch or anything. I’m interested in hearing about your day-to-day tasks, pet peeves, plans for growth, that kind of stuff.

I don’t own such a business but I work for one. Want to talk to me?

If your responsibilities directly affect the bottom line, then yes. If you work for a big company and the owner probably doesn’t know your name, then no. We should also be careful about chatting if you don’t own the business, as your boss may not like you telling me the in’s and out’s. Make sure you clear it with them first, or ask if he/she can spare some time to chat with me directly.

Any more questions, drop them in the comments below.

Thanks in advance for your help!
