I was aiming to keep my expenses under €2.5k for the month, so didn’t do very well there. Business expenses were higher than expected (damn postage), and I spent more than planned on food, flights, and accommodation.

Biggest Regret?

If I could go back a couple of months, I don’t think I’d bother running that giveaway for Mark Manson’s new book. It has eaten up significant time and money. Hasn’t been worth it.

Where That Leaves Me

I had €8,666/$9,742 to my name at the end of September.

Taking into account all my October income and expenditure, and the most recent exchange rates – I have accounts in EUR, HKD and USD – my total bank and cash balances now work out to €7,343/$8.063. 29

Outlook For November

Lots of uncertainty on the income front. I’ll be on the hunt as usual for new freelance projects, but hard to predict what will come of those efforts. I probably have about $1k lined up already, and 3M1K should pull in another $1k, so I’m estimating $2k minimum and will aim for at least $3k to stretch myself.

As for expenses, I may look to rent my own apartment here in Tenerife, so may have to put down a deposit and a month in advance for that. I’ll also be paying for more Spanish lessons and starting surf lessons. Nothing else out of the ordinary planned. I do need to book flights to Ireland for Christmas but may be able to get them free with credit card miles. I’ll aim to keep everything under $2.5k.

Footnotes

1. This is my premium course that teaches people how to start an online freelancing business.
2. Disappointed with this, was hoping to land a bit more client work for the month.

You can find links and details for my latest web dev projects here.
3. Before leaving Berlin, I sold my bicycle to a friend there. Bought it for €160 three months prior and used it a lot.
4. I don’t proactively seek coaching work, but occasionally people reach out and ask for it and I’m happy to oblige. The $50 here was for a 30-minute coaching call, helping someone figure out a plan to become location independent.
5. I linked to this book in a previous finance report and a few people clicked through and bought it. Hence, commission :-)
6. I currently have two books for sale on Amazon:

The Cargo Ship Diaries

Disrupting the Rabblement

7. I also sell my Cargo Ship Diaries book direct via this website.
8. Way up from last month. Under €400 is what I usually aim for. Treated a few friends to meals in October, which I guess I could list under Gifts & Donations further down, but I couldn’t be arsed separating it out.
9. I got lucky with my living situation in Berlin. A friend offered to sublet me his place while out of town for three months. If I had to find a place on my own it would have taken a good bit of searching and I doubt I would have found something for less than €700/month.
10. Tis a nice place, rented via Coworking in the Sun.
11. This is a Wandering Earl tour scheduled for March 2017. If you’d like to join, see the video here.
12. My sublet in Berlin ended earlier than expected. I could have kept my original flight and stayed in a hotel or hostel in Berlin for a week, but decided to pay the price to change my flight and escape the cold weather.
13. This crazy postage expense is from shipping 25 copies of Mark Manson’s new book all around the world, to the winners of this contest I ran a few weeks back.
14. Gotta say, I’m loving coworking so far. I always avoided it in the past, figuring I could focus better at home, but I’m just as productive at the coworking space, and it’s great for social interaction during lunch breaks and at evenings and weekends.
15. I have an assistant helping me with 3M1K and I also hire some other freelancers every now and then to help me out with various projects.
16. This should be my last VAT payment to the Irish government, now that my business operations have been relocated to the USA.
17. I use this to manage my freelance and personal projects. Handy for communicating with clients and contractors and keeping everything organized.
18. Membership software for the 3M1K website.
19. Makes it easier to update my website via my iPhone.
20. This service allows me to receive old-fashioned mail in the USA without having a physical address there. They scan any mail received and email it to me, and can also forward along any important documents to another address I specify.
21. Bought this at the airport upon arrival in Tenerife. Came with 1GB of data.
22. I use Gumroad to process payments for my book The Cargo Ship Diaries.
23. A small gift for the friend who hosted me in Amsterdam for a few days.
24. You can see all my book recommendations and what I’m currently reading over on Goodreads. I buy many books via Amazon affiliate credit so you won’t always see my book purchases listed here.
25. Phenomenal. This has changed how I work. A friend told me it was the best book he’d ever read on productivity, and I might have to say the same.
26. Unfinished so unrated. You’ll be able to see how I rate it on Goodreads once I’m finished.
27. Unfinished so unrated. You’ll be able to see how I rate it on Goodreads once I’m finished.
28. These lessons are via iTalki.com. Averages out to about $9/hour. I’ve already had classes with teachers in Venezuela and Mexico. Aiming to do at least 3 hours of focused speaking practice each week.
29. Note that these totals are never quite right, on account of the different currencies and money constantly moving around between accounts. But I couldn’t be arsed figuring it all out perfectly and the above figures are close enough so let’s roll with them.
