Tenerife otra vez. In the shadow of Los Gigantes as the sun goes down, cliffs once thought to be the walls of hell. We’ve got cheese and wine on a black sand beach. Actually the beach ain’t great, but the company is. We were supposed to sleep atop a mountain tonight, but plans changed and we’ll be at the Wolfhouse instead.
My girl, she’s a photographer, good at what she does. Through her photos, you get a sense of how she sees the world. And I like how she sees the world. At Masca today, crazy winding roads and spectacular views, and I’m thinking how it would look through her eyes. Or at least her lens. What would she see that most would miss…
Today was made of the same stuff those fun YouTube videos are made of. Road trip with good people to the number one water park in the world, sliding and screaming down vertical drops and zipping through a shark tank. Dinner at a steakhouse and sunset on the beach, then the rush to the airport. Exhausted now, and it’s almost midnight, but I still gotta squeeze in an hour of Español to save myself $300.
It’s times like this that remind me I’m more on the introvert side of the spectrum. Extroverts are energized when interacting with other people, whereas I need quiet time and solitude to recharge. Spending the afternoon with an extrovert drains me, trying to constantly be present, listen to and process their incessant expression. Methinks I picked the wrong month to quit caffeine.
Actually the caffeine thing isn’t working out too good. Gave it up for the month as an experiment, now three weeks deep and I can’t say I’ve noticed any significant benefits. I don’t seem to be sleeping any better, which was the main thing I was hoping for, and I miss a nice cup of tea or coffee and the occasional boost from the latter. Looking forward to March 1st already.
Last time I bought a laptop was four years back, when I was living in Bangkok. That little MacBook Air has served me well, connected me to the world and earned me a good living, through a couple dozen countries and across two oceans. Now I’m buying a new machine in Tenerife. Where will I be next time round?
I shaved the goatee a few days ago. First time being clean shaven since 2010 methinks. Thought it would be a big deal, thought people would comment. But nobody did. Don’t think anyone’s noticed. Lots of things are like that. In our heads they’re significant, but to others not so much. Probably even that big scary thing you want to do.
Today was a nice one for the online business. Woke up to see a couple of overnight sales of the Cheap Flight Checklist, plus a $10 voucher sent my way from Amazon’s affiliate program. Then I clocked in for a few hours and earned myself close to $300 working on client projects. And this eve a payment came through from a member of 3M1K.
He waved me to a stop because I wasn’t supposed to change lanes back there, across the solid line, especially right in front of a police station. Now he’s giving me an earful, and I’m playing the dumb tourist card, pretending my Spanish is worse than it is and that I’m unfamiliar with the road rules in this strange, foreign land.
Not sure if I mentioned that I cancelled my trip to Taiwan. Lost its appeal when I looked into accommodation options… and after I found myself a girlfriend. New plan is to stay in Gran Canaria until the end of April, then meet up with herself and head to Bali, perhaps via Japan. But before that we’ll do a test run together in Portugal and Spain next month.
Try to keep in mind that we are surrounded by magic. All day, every day. I can speak at length with my girl three thousand miles away at zero cost, then think of a recent blockbuster and be watching it in bed two minutes later for the price of a cup of coffee. We are kings and queens, all of us, better off than any human could have ever hoped to be not so long ago.
It’s okay to miss out on things. I’m missing out on most of Carnaval here in Las Palmas, choosing to work instead. I’ll have a good day of it on Saturday, and that’s enough for me. No matter where you are in the world, there’s always some fun thing going on, some adventure to be had, and if you try to do it all, see it all, experience it all, not only will you fail, but you’ll also burn yourself out.
In the comments below, let me know which of the above Momentos is your favorite. Which can you relate to?
